WMU SAFE RIDE PROGRAM (7-RIDE)

WHAT IS THE WMU SAFE RIDE PROGRAM?

The Safe Ride program is a service designed to enhance your safety and peace of mind while you walk on campus after dark. The primary purpose of the WMU Safe Ride program is to provide escorts to persons walking alone to on-campus destinations such as classrooms, buildings, residence halls and parked cars and is concerned about walking alone at night-not just simply for the sake of a free ride.

Safe Ride also provides additional eyes and ears for the WMU Police Department by observing the campus environment during the escort service. All Safe Ride personnel are equipped with a two-way radio for direct access to the Department of Public Safety’s police dispatch center.

Personnel are not permitted to become involved in any physical altercations.

Safe Ride employees are carefully screened for employment. Like all our other employment groups, student employees must have:

  • Clean driving records.
  • No criminal history
  • Positive recommendations for employment.

PROGRAM GUIDELINES:

*Three or more people travelling together do not qualify for an escort, there is safety in numbers.

*Escorts will be provided for on-campus origins and destinations only. Escorts will not be provided off campus.

*If your starting location is a short distance away from your ending location, you will be given a walking escort at the discretion of the dispatcher.

*Individuals who are visibly intoxicated or disorderly will be refused an escort by Safe Ride employees.

* Safe Ride employees or the police dispatcher reserve the right to refuse an escort to anyone based on the above guidelines.

* Groups of 3 or more, or those wanting transport to-or-from an off campus location might consider contacting one of the many local taxi companies.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE SAFE RIDE PROGRAM?

Students, staff and faculty wishing to have an escort, should call 269-387-RIDE (7433). The escort driver / walker will arrive within a few minutes, depending on call volume.

Unfortunately, due to severe weather and other factors beyond our control, this service may be cancelled on limited occasions.
